Common Stock

This is the most common type of stock that people invest in. Unlike preferred stock, common stock represents ownership and gives stockholders voting rights proportional to the number of shares owned. Employees and founders usually receive common stock. A type of equity security, contrasted with preferred shares. Common stock is most frequently issued to founders, management, and employees. In a liquidation event, preferred shares generally take priority over common shares.
